It is a Basque school promoted and supported by families who since the outset in 1957, forming a full co-operative in 1970 have decided to face head on the education of their children within the traditional Basque culture and language. Nowadays this association is made up of 1200 families.
The board members decided in 1988 to remain a grant aided school and not accept the offer from other Ikastolas to become a public school.
Lauro Ikastola has schooling 1.880 pupils in the four stages of education before University: Infants, primary, secondary and Baccalaureate. In these later courses students can take various subjects in English.
The infrastrucure consists of 4 buildings and a sports centre with swimming pool designed to provide students with a flexible environment in which to learn. Each building is designed in such a way to provide each learning stage with the adequate materials and at the same time fulfil the curriculum.
Lauro has a staff of 118 teachers and 24 non teaching staff.
Here we offer cooking and dining room facilities on the premises and both cleaning and transport services as well.
The sportscentre Behekosoloa is also open outside school hours and is open both Lauro and non-Lauro customers.
